Once loved quilts...

Do you ever wonder when you see old quilts, why did the maker choose certain colors or patterns?  Was this quilt specifically for an upcoming wedding or was it for decor?  Was it made for someone by a hired seamstress or by the mother or grandmother?  Was the maker skilled, or was this a first time quilt?  I often have many questions when I see old quilts.  This selection was from a recent trip to an antique store on Saturday.  My husband and I just had to take that trip down memory lane...
I always ask myself a lot of questions when I see these old quilts...maybe it is because I just want to know their story...how they came about...who loved using them...how did they end up without an owner in an antique store after so much love....

I think the only thing I have really ever wondered about is what they made the quilt out of. Is it clothes or fabric or what?

I ask a lot of those same questions too. Because of those unanswered questions with so many antique quilts, I now label each quilt I make. Mine may end up in a store, but atleast they will know the author.

I have recently received an old double wedding ring quilt that my cousin was going to sell at a rummage sale. Luckily my Mom was there and bought it. My grandma had made the quilt for my Mom, but somehow it had gotten into the hands of her sis. Anyway after she passed my cousin didn't want the quilt - it has some damage. Maybe he had some other quilts made by our grandma, I don't know. This is how family quilts end up in the hands of strangers. Lots of people do not understand the love that is sewn into quilts... the long hours, the joy of sewing and choosing the fabrics. It's just a thing to them. (How sad is that!)

I think about it when I see home made crochet baby items. Lovingly made by Gma....... now in Salvation Army. I saved everything like that, the girls have a blessing gown that my Gma made for their blessings and now my Gdaughter has worn it. They know I will haunt them if they get rid of it. LOL But you gave me some great things to think about next time I see a quilt for sale at the garage sale.

Hugs,
Vicki
