When I put my Tree of Life blocks together, I use these mini design boards by Lori Holt. My sister, Rose made these for my birthday last year and I love them and use them...they allow me to lay out the block and sew it together much easier...
This block has 4 different sections that are sewn before the block is sewn together...
You can stack these little boards with the blocks laid out on them and transport them or to make it easier to move from point A to point B...you can check out Lori Holt's tutorial here...

Aren't design boards handy? I don't have any that small, but I have about 30 of them in varying sizes. Comes in real handy when making a sampler quilt. Get every block cut and laid out on a board, then just stack them up until you are ready to sew them. I love them! That is a fun idea for a birthday gift for a quilter! : )
